Springbok coach Allister Coetzee says Johan Goosen is SA’s version of Beauden Barrett.
And like Barrett did when he steered the Hurricanes to Super Rugby glory earlier this year, Coetzee will be hoping Goosen can help his team to their first Rugby Championship since 2009.
Talking up Goosen, who has been chosen at fullback for the Bokke against Argentina in Nelspruit tomorrow (5.05pm), Coetzee says: “When people watch New Zealand rugby, they look at Beauden Barrett and they say ‘jee, this guy slots in anywhere – at fullback or 10’.
“We’ve got a similar type of player in Goosen, who is really quick off the mark, he’s got unbelievable running skills, aerial skills second to none and he kicks the ball a mile.
“So I’m really happy to have selected Johan at 15 and I’m looking forward to him playing at 15 for us this weekend.”
Goosen, who has been working with All Blacks legend Dan Carter at Racing Metro, will have a point to prove when he plays in his first Test since 2014 when he also played at fullback against Italy.
