After being linked with a move to the Golden Lions, Blitzbok flyer Seabelo Senatla has committed his future to Western Province.
Senatla, currently recovering from a wrist injury he suffered while on Sevens duty with the national team at the Olympic Games, signed a three-year deal with the union, WP confirmed yesterday.
Director of Rugby at Province, Gert Smal, says: “It is a pity that Seabelo injured himself at the Rio Olympics, but we are grateful to be able to call on his services for the next three years.”
While Senatla is unavailable for WP’s match against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth tomorrow (4pm), another Sevens international Werner Kok was selected on the right wing as Province look to register their first win of the season.
Smal is excited to see Kok in action and says: “Werner has proven himself as one of the best Sevens players in the world, and he has all the attributes to be an outstanding backline asset for us.
“We are excited to see what he offers in the Currie Cup.”
Fullback Cheslin Kolbe will also make his first start of the season in the domestic competition, with Dan du Plessis coming in for Johnny Kotze at inside centre.
Up front, Jurie van Vuuren starts on the flank, with JD Schickerling coming in at lock and JC Janse van Rensburg starting at loosehead prop.
Having made wholesale changes to the squad that lost to the Free State Cheetahs last weekend, coach John Dobson says: “We have challenged the players to raise their effort levels this weekend against what is a tough Eastern Province Kings side.
“We have not been up to standard thus far this season, and that has to change.”
Of the new faces in his squad, Dobson adds: “It is exciting to see the energy that the new players… have brought.”
