BLAZE: Squatter camp in Villiersdorp

Villiersdorp leaves 29 families destitute.

About 100 mense have been left destitute after a fire raged through an informal settlement in Villiersdorp and destroyed about 30 structures.

Community leader councillor Rinah Mienies says it was heartbreaking to see mense scrambling to save their possessions.

“It was chaos. People were crying as they ran to save their belongings.

“Some of them lost everything, including what they started buying for Christmas,” says Mienies.

She adds that at least 29 families were affected by the blaze yesterday.

“We don’t know where we are going to house them as we have no community hall and learners are busy writing exams in the school hall,” said a worried Mienies.

Overberg Fire and Rescue Chief Reinard Geldenhuys says the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Approximately 10 firefighters struggled to contain the blaze which broke out between 11 and 12am. “The fire spread quite rapidly because they are so close to each other. One man was injured quite seriously and was taken to hospital,” he adds.

Anyone with donations for the destitute families can contact Mienies on 071 475 1398.
