Teachers and children were shocked to find the bathrooms vandalised and taps, piping and cabling ripped out and stolen.

A newly-built primary school in Hanover Park was badly vandalised over the weekend.

The school was handed over in December and learners were able to step into a brand-new building.

But yesterday the principal, teachers and children were shocked to find the bathrooms vandalised and taps, piping and cabling ripped out and stolen.

Water was gushing out of the damaged pipes, flooding floors.

But just a few hours later, the school’s palie Mr Issel was overseeing a team of mense, hard at work fixing the pipes and taps, and learners had minimum disruption to their day.

Parent Sandra Josephs, 43, says this is the second act of vandalism at the school.

“It is common at other schools in the area, but this new school is kwaai and the tikkoppe just try to ruin everything in our area. Our kids deserve better than this and the community must stand up or this school will also be ruined,” says Sandra.

Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department MEC, Debbie Schafer, says the damage is extensive.

She says: “The toilets and basins were vandalised and pipes and cabling were stolen. The palisade fencing was broken to gain access and the security doors were vandalised. Our Safe Schools Directorate has assigned additional security to the school and will meet with the School Safety Committee to discuss the safety plan and security reinforcements.”

“We urge community members to be extra vigilant.”
