A man was shot dead while on his way to help another gunshot victim.
The 32-year-old man, known only as Morné, was visiting family in Kewtown, Athlone, when he was gunned down on Sunday afternoon.
A friend, 42, who was with him but does not want to be identified, says Morné was fetching his bakkie to transport another wounded gunshot victim to hospital.
The man says: “We heard gunshots around 3.30pm and Morné and I went to go check on our children because they were playing outside.
“When we arrived at that house the victim was lying inside with a gunshot wound to his leg.
“The people there asked Morné if he could drive [the victim] to the hospital and we walked back.
“I was walking a short distance away from him when a car pulled up and one of the occupants got out and opened fire on him.
“He shot Morné in the stomach twice and as he fell [the gunman] walked up to him and shot him in the head.
“Someone heard Morné tell [the gunman] he is not part of a gang or with them.”
Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana says a case of murder was opened for investigation.
“Upon arrival, [police] found a victim, 32-year-old male victim, with gunshot wounds to his body and head.
“No one has been arrested,” she says.
