FAT SALARY: Malema earns R101 885 per month.

The average MP earns about R86 120 a month.

EFF leader Julius Malema earns a fat salary as an MP, although it’s still not enough to afford a holiday house in Clifton.

As a leader of a minority party‚ the Economic Freedom Fighters leader nets a cool R1 222 606 a year or R101 885 salary a month‚ according to researchers Africa Check.

The average MP earns about R1 033 434 a year‚ or R86 120 a month.

And it’s now clear to see why National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete is always dressed to the nines in designer outfits.

Mbete and her counterpart in the National Council of Provinces‚ Thandi Modise‚ each earns a whopping R2 716 798 a year.

Their salaries‚ according to Africa Check‚ are the same as that of South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Cabinet ministers get R2 309 262 a year, which is well under the top salary of President Jacob Zuma, who earns an annual salary of R2.8 million.

The leader of the opposition‚ Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane, is also not off too badly, taking home R1 494 192 a year, or R124 516 a month.

It’s not clear if MPs receive other benefits above and beyond their salaries, which could include free airplane flights.

By comparison, a senior civil engineer can expect to earn between R42 088 to R54 516 a month.
