SABC hacked

HIT: Hlaudi Motsoenengs SABC was censored.

The SABC was the target of a hack attack this week.

Hacker Anonymous Africa claimed responsibility for the shutdown of several SABC websites on Sunday.

The hacker, who goes by the twitter handle @zim4thewin, was reportedly trying to give the SABC a taste of its own medicine by “censoring” its websites.

This comes after SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng announced the broadcaster would no longer show footage of protests in which state property is damaged.

Radio and TV presenters also had to stop reading newspaper headlines, which he said was free advertising.

On Saturday night, @zim4thewin tweeted: “Journalists, if you are bored. Tomorrow, at around lunch time, the SABC will be on the receiving end of largest DDoS attack to hit SA ever”.

“SABC are being censored for censoring,” it said.

DDOS stands for Distributed Denial of Service.

At around noon on Sunday, the SABC’s main site as well as SAfm and 5FM’s sites were inaccessible.

The hack ended at 4pm, but the hackers promised: “We are not done yet, lots of action coming. Things are going to get wild!”
