SABC confirms local takeover

SCRAPPED: Long-running soapie Days of Lives.

All the rumours have been officially confirmed, the SABC is going 80 percent local on all its TV channels.

Soapie Days Of Our Lives is ending on July 20 and there will be no new season of The Amazing Race.

They are both casualties of the SABC’s new plan to give all three its channels more local flavour.

The SABC’s Chief Operations Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng says: “As an organisation we are moving towards an era of great transformation in terms of programming, where all these changes are aimed at placing our audience’s needs and wants.”

He adds: “The SABC firmly believes in delivering on its mandate to promote local content and this decision to increase the local quota on television will not only yield an increased audience share, but will further contribute to the South African public being proud of its quality local content.”

From July 4, 7de Laan will start at 7pm, while the Afrikaans news moves to 7.30pm.

There are many new local shows starting next month including Real Talk hosted by Anele Mdoda (July 21, SABC3 at 4pm), and Late Night Talk hosted by comedian Jason Goliath (July 4 on SABC3 at 10pm).

Saturday and Sunday mornings Phat Joe and Khanyi Mbau host The Weekend Edition.
