Bafana Bafana boss Shakes Mashaba is confident that he will have a solid defence as they look for a fast start to their World Cup qualification campaign.
Ahead of Saturday’s clash with Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou, there have been concerns about Ajax Cape Town’s Rivaldo Coetzee and Kaizer Chiefs pair Eric Mathoho and Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
With Rivaldo missing the game with a hamstring injury suffered in the Urban Warriors’ defeat to Cape Town City in the derby two Fridays ago, Platinum Stars centreback Isaac Nhlapo has been called up.
Bafana doctor Thulani Ngwenya says: “We have Rivaldo, [who] had a hamstring injury and his scan shows that he can’t actually travel with us, and the coach has subsequently replaced him.”
But Mathoho and Mphahlele look to have shaken off their injuries. Shakes says: “I saw Mathoho is here. The only player that hasn’t come [on time] is ‘Rama’, but that’s nothing serious. They [Chiefs] gave us his scan report. He is not so bad, and he’ll be joining us. The rest are already here.”
Ngwenya adds of Mphahlele: “The scan report showed that he has an ankle sprain, but I think it’s something that we can actually manage.
“We’ll wait for him to come through and then we will make an objective assessment.”
