SA Sevens kickstart Olympics bid in style

FIREPOWER: Seabelo Senatla

Blitzbokke haal uit en wys in Rio.

If the guys in Rio still didn’t know about Team South Africa at the Olympic Games, the Blitzbokke made them wys yesterday.

With Cecil Afrika starring, the Sevens team made light work of Spain in their tournament opener, beating them 24-0 before facing France late last night.

It was Afrika who announced coach Neil Powell’s team in style when he scored the first try in their quest for gold after a quick tap penalty by Juan de Jongh.

Afrika converted his own try from the touchline, before adding another five-pointer before the break as the Spaniards were looking to come back into the match (14-0).

Seabelo Senatla added SA’s third, before Phillip Snyman dotted down for their fourth try of the match.

Afrika then knocked on while already over the tryline, missing out on his hattrick.

What was of concern for Powell, though, was the amount of ball not going to hand for the South Africans – something they need to work on if they want gold.
