The Springboks have hit rock bottom after crashing to their worst ever defeat at home.
Saturday’s 57-15 humiliation at the hands of the world champion All Blacks was also the third-biggest loss in Bok history.
And it’s been coming. Under Allister Coetzee this year, the Boks have never looked settled and at times played without purpose.
In Durban this weekend, they didn’t play with ball in hand, kicking away possession at every opportunity.
The ruthless All Blacks took advantage and ran in nine tries.
And if it hadn’t been for Beauden Barrett’s wayward boot and some desperate Bok defending at times, it could have been worse.
A hurting Bok coach Coetzee said afterwards: “It’s in a way embarrassing, you know – the way we sort of fell apart in the second half. I don’t want to make excuses. The only thing is if your effort is not good enough, and you get punished like this …”
