A 35-year-old robbery suspect is under police guard in hospital after he fell out of his getaway car and was shot in the arm by a security guard.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk says the incident happened yesterday morning at a store in West Beach near Table View.

He says two cops, who were filling their SAPS vehicle at a nearby petrol station, responded to the robbery.

According to information received, a security officer stopped at the shop for coffee.

Van Wyk says: “Five unidentified armed men entered the store and took the security officer’s pistol, hand radio and car keys.”

The store manager alerted the two cops outside, who in turn called the Table View SAPS.

When the suspects saw the two cops, they fled the store through the back, and jumped into the getaway vehicle.

However, the nabbed suspect fell to the ground from the moving car.

He tried to flee on foot but was spotted by a security guard.

The suspect held the guard at gunpoint but he shot back, hitting the suspect in the arm.

The other four suspects were still on the run.
