A dom skelm is on the run from cops after he tried to buy chicken with Zim dollars and then robbed a spaza shop.
The dief probably thought Mubarak Spaza shop in Leeubekkie Street, Gansbaai, was a place where he could exchange the nearly useless Zimbabwean currency for something more valuable, like a lekker dite or South African geld.
According to a friend of the shopkeeper, who refused to give his name, the suspect came into the shop on Wednesday afternoon at about 5pm pretending to buy chicken.
“He then came to the till and wanted to pay the lady with Zim dollars. [But then] he hit and kicked her and also tried to stab her when she refused to take it,” says the Somali man.
He adds that the victim, who is also a Somali national, recognised the skelm as a man who lives close to the shop.
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says the suspect robbed the store and fled and is still at large.
“According to reports the victim was threatened with a knife. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount,” she adds.
