BIG HAUL: Perlemoen factory shutdown

Over 26 015 units of dried abalone was seized in Gordon's Bay.

The Hawks have arrested two suspects and confiscated perlemoen worth R4.5 million in a raid in Gordon’s Bay.

Spokesman for the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Captain Lloyd Ramovha, says a search and seizure operation yesterday morning, comprising members of the Hawks, the SAPS’ K9 and the Department of Fisheries and Forestry, resulted in the arrest of two foreign nationals aged 23 and 28.

“The suspects, a Chinese and a Zimbabwean national, were found in the house allegedly used as an illegal
abalone processing facility.

“Equipment and over 26 015 units of dried abalone valued at over R4.5 million were seized. We shall continue to dismantle clandestine laboratories in intensified endeavours to rid our coast lines of this scourge,” Ramovha says.

The pair are expected to appear in Strand Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
