A good deed turned deadly for a deputy principal when he was shot and killed by suspected hijackers after dropping off an 18-year-old schoolgirl at home.
Dr Anton Diedericks, 57, was the deputy headmaster of Academy Private School in Kuils River, and lived in Durbanville.
He was driving his white Hyundai i20 when he was ambushed by gunmen at the stop street on the corner of Dickens and Sierra Streets in Mandalay yesterday afternoon just before 1pm.
Residents say they heard a single gunshot and rushed outside to find Anton slumped in the driver’s seat.
The window on the driver’s side had been shattered by the bullet that struck him in his neck.
The pupil he had just dropped off at her home also rushed to the scene, crying hysterically.
The shocked meisie did not want to speak to the media.
According to police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana, the teacher had taken the girl home after she fell ill at school.
Police believe the motive for the murder was hijacking.
“After dropping the girl safely at home, the victim was standing at a stop street, signalling to go right out of Mandalay when four unknown suspects approached the vehicle and then shot the victim in the right side of his neck.
“The suspects fled the scene in a blue Toyota Avanza. The victim passed away at the scene in his vehicle.”
Rwexana says police are investigating a case of murder.
Police informed the victim’s wife, a medical doctor, about his death.
