A Muslim man who stopped to pray on the side of a busy highway has died after he was hit by a car while chasing a skelm.
The deceased, a Somalian national, and a second person stopped along the R300 near Jakes Gerwel Drive on Tuesday night to pray when the suspect came and took something from their bakkie.
Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says one of the men chased after the suspect and they were both hit by a passing vehicle.
“The men parked their vehicle on the side of the road when they got out to pray,” Africa tells the Daily Voice.
“As they were praying, another man came and took something from the bakkie and one of the (praying) men ran after him.
“A car struck both of them and the man died in the crash.
“The [suspect] was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital,” Africa says.
He urged motorists not to stop along the R300 and N2 highways.
“These roads are classified as red zones and we really urge people not to stop on the side of the road because of all the robberies,” he says.
Captain Frederick van Wyk says police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
