Western Cape police are in mourning after two of their colleagues — a husband and wife — died in a car accident at the weekend.
The couple, who was stationed in Robertson, were killed in a collision on the R60 outside Worcester in the early hours of Saturday.
“We are in total and utter shock,” Robertson police spokeswoman Cynthia Ndabeni told the Weekend Argus.
Sergeant Ashley October, 37, and his wife Beverley, 35, also a sergeant, died about 3am when their car collided head on with another vehicle.
Their smashed up car went down an embankment and into a river as a result of the collision.
“All of our members have visited the families to pay their respects and I can tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” Ndabeni said.
The couple have two sons aged 11 and 15.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said there was nothing that paramedics could do for them, and the couple were declared dead on the scene.
Ndabeni said the Octobers were on their way home from Worcester to Robertson when tragedy struck.
The driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured while a passenger in that car was also killed, Vermaak says.
