Man, 32, with 'good diving skills' drowns near Jesse's Bay.

Cops are investigating the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of a suspected poacher who drowned while allegedly diving for perlemoen over the weekend.

Friends of the man identified as Terra Johnson, 32, from Zwelihle, Hermanus, say they saw him swimming behind his friends at about 2pm on Sunday near Jesse’s Bay in the Gansbaai area.

A while later they noticed that he hadn’t come out of the ocean with his friends and started looking for him.

“When we looked again, we saw him floating and realised something was wrong,” says one.

They brought Johnson to the beach but it was too late to save him.

“He was already dead. There was foam coming from his mouth and the goggles someone gave him after his broke were hanging around his neck.

“We don’t know what happened because he was a good diver and he is still young,” says the man.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirms that cops are investigating an inquest docket.

“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” she adds.
