Penny: ‘I love blacks’

LIVING IN FEAR: Penny Sparrow

Fined racist says she wouldn't have a problem if a family member dated a black person.

Penny Sparrow says she thinks “black people are wonderful” and she’s not a racist.

In an interview with News24, the former estate agent from Durban says she’d also have no problem if anyone in her family dated a black person.

At the beginning of the year, Sparrow posted a racist rant on Facebook after going to the beach.

“These monkeys that are allowed to be released on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day on to public beaches, towns etc obviously have no education so to allow them loose is inviting huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others,” Sparrow wrote.

The ANC took her to the Equality Court, who fined her R150 000, which was to be paid to the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation.

But Sparrow, who was not in court due to illness, claims the court treated her unfairly by denying her a postponement.

“I found the case very unfair because I didn’t know it was happening. There have been a lot of things said about me on the radio and I am sick to death of hearing it,” she saud.

Sparrow claims she’s living in constant fear.

“I haven’t been able to go to the police stations and make affidavits because I am truly scared for my life,” she says.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress’s Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal accused the Democratic Alliance of being behind a crowdfunding plan to raise funds to help Sparrow pay her fine.

Responding to a query on the social media platform Twitter, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille responded: “Another total fabrication. As usual.”
