A shootout erupted during a tense stand-off between gangsters and anti-crime group Pagad in Mitchells Plain yesterday.
People Against Gangsterism and Drugs spokesperson Haroon Orrie could not confirm who fired the first shots but says no one was injured.
The incident took place in Artemis Road in New Woodlands just before 2pm.
“The community called us in because they were being terrorised by gangsters in the area,” Orrie tells the Daily Voice.
“People’s houses were being smashed by the gangsters.
“An incident occurred of which the details we’re not going to divulge.
“There was a stand-off between Pagad and the gangsters.”
Orrie says there are “different gangs operating in the area”.
He added: “We always maintained that the community has the right to defend themselves.”
There was a large police presence in the area for several hours after the incident.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut confirms there were no injuries.
“This office is aware of a complaint of a shooting incident in Woodlands. No arrests have been made,” Traut says.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, an alleged member of the Americans gang was killed in Rocklands.
The 26-year-old man was shot dead in Sparrow Street on Saturday night.
An eyewitness said the victim was targeted after his brother allegedly shot and killed someone on Friday night.
“They came for him because they could not get to his brother. They are both gangsters. His brother shot a member of the Schoolboys gang,” the woman says.
Traut confirmed the incident but said that no arrests have been made yet.
