Tapfuma Makina is on cloud nine after his “one-hit wonder” Ougat Met Jou hit the top spot on Heart FM’s Top 40 after only two weeks.
The gatmaak song, sang in Afrikaans to the tune of Silk’s Freak Me, debuted last week at No.3 on the chart, but was quickly pushed to No.1 after a public vote.
The Heart presenter says he’s been overwhelmed by the support.
“I thought people would just get tired of it and it would disappear as many other songs have before, but no, people are actually loving the track,” he says proudly.
He says he was driving home from the gym on Saturday afternoon when he heard Paul Playdon give him the good news over the radio just before 2pm.
“I couldn’t believe it. I did a little scream in the car, and it felt good knowing listeners were voting for my song. I am very humbled.”
The Zimbabwean national has been learning Afrikaans on radio for months, wrote the song in one week and shot the video with radio personality Jo-dee Butler at N1 City’s Wonderland within four hours.
He jokes: “In nine months time, when there is a sudden population growth and people calling their kids Tapfuma, we will all know why.”
