Finally, Western Province have done something right.
This week the union announced their annual new Western Province Rugby Institute intake. And they have hung onto two of the most promising young talents in the region.
Salmaan Moerat and Damian Willemse captained and vice-captained the SA Schools team last year after making waves at Craven Week.
For once, WP haven’t seen their brightest and best snapped up by one of the northern sides.
And in lock Moerat and flyhalf Willemse, they have a couple of gems to polish.
At the tender age of 19, they will have to be patient to get their shot in positions WP will be strong in this season.
For Moerat, he will have to get in ahead of Springbok ysters Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit. Then there is JD Schickerling too.
Willemse has all the flair to be a Newlands hero, but he has Robert du Preez and Jean-Luc du Plessis ahead of him.
But being called up to the Stormers for the Super Rugby season could be a step too far for the next generation of Streeptruie.
They can expect some Currie Cup rugby later this year. But things could change quickly.
Especially for Willemse, who has been running at No.10 for most of pre-season already.
There are some worried generals at Stormers. “Veteran” Kurt Coleman will have to play his best ever rugby to convince Gert Smal that he is worth keeping around Bellville.
