After securing survival in the Western Province Super League A , UWC coach Chester Williams already started recruiting for next year’s tournament.
En dit lyk of hy raakvat, starting with Parow NNK lock Anrich "Mossie" Mostert, who will join UWC next year.
They say white men can’t jump. But then again, the guys saying that probably never saw the 19-year-old lock Mostert in action.
This boy can certainly jump and standing nearly 2m tall in his socks, Mostert still has two years to grow.
Already colossal at lineout time for NNK , the youngster shows a lot of potential.
Having spent some time earlier this season with the SWD U20 team, the WP Academy star has been one of the go-to-guy for NNK in their quest to stay in the Western Province Super League A this year.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, though, as Mossie’s undoubted talent has been realised by former Springbok hero Williams, who lured the youngster to UWC ahead of next season.
Mostert says: “I’m going to study law at UWC next year. Chester [Williams] approached me and it’s an opportunity that you simply have to take with both hands.”
He does, however, admit that leaving behind his "family" at NNK will be difficult.
Mossie, who is a Weskus klong, adds: “It will be sad to play against them [NNK, next year]. They were my family for a year and I wouldn’t have chosen any other club.”
But Mostert knows in order to get the best out of his rugby career, playing for UWC in the Varsity Shield will give him more exposure and with a willingness to learn, he wants to make it to the big time.
The youngster adds: “I can always improve my game, I am only 19 now. I want to take my rugby to the highest level and that’s why I am working hard.”
While NNK have a bye this weekend, UWC aren’t as lucky.
Williams’ team were on the road last night when they travelled to Stellenbosch to face Vics, while they will travel to Sir Lowrians on Saturday.
After being thumped by Belhar last weekend, Sir Lowrians are all but relegated from the top flight.
But who will go down with them at the end of the season remains a mystery.
With three games to play, Kuilsrivier are currently second from bottom, two games in hand on both NNK and Primrose in 12th and 13th respectively.
With Roses also off this weekend, a win against either one of Maties or Vics in the next week will see them jump to 12th and out of the drop zone.
