Winter is not just for eating soups and stews, it’s also the time we get to enjoy some of our favourite citrus fruits.
You know it’s winter when you spot hawkers at nearly every intersection selling sakkies naartjies and oranges.
And you know winter has settled in when the bags are selling at just R5 each. D an kan jy jou geluk nie glo nie!
My colleague Ayanda Ndamane and I would always try and find the best looking naartjies , in between chasing Daily Voice crime stories.
One of our regular spots was the intersection at Robert Sobukwe and the R300 highway.
By the time we arrive in Town, there’d be nothing but peels.
We would eat those sweet things one after the other like our lives and sanity depended on it.
I was reminded of those days just this weekend when I took a drive to my nearest supermarket because I craved a naartjie so bad.
Within hours, the sakkie was all done.
Oranges are also a favourite of mine, however peeling a lemoen usually puts me off from buying them - especially when I’m not at home.
I love cutting my oranges in quarters, it reminds me of my days in crèche where the “tjeacher” would stuff an orange in our hand while we wait to be fetched.
Even though I couldn’t tell time, that stukkie lemoen was always an indication that tjaila time is near.
And let’s not forget all the great health benefits associated with citrus fruits, it’s a great source of vitamin C which helps fight colds and flu, it’s high in fibre and adding grapefruit to your diet promotes a healthy heart.
