Benni McCarthy has a massive game ahead of him tonight.
Lose to Polokwane at home and Cape Town City will suddenly be on a three-match losing streak.
It’s amazing how quickly the wheel turns.
Just last week I was here talking about what Benni says he will do if his team should go off the rails.
Before back-to-back defeats to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, City were flying high with five wins in a row.
Benni had never tasted defeat as a professional coach and things looked just so easy for the only South African to win the Uefa Champions League.
But the bad times are always just around the corner and the results have been on the slide.
The defeats to the Sowetan giants weren’t the worst performances you would see from a professional football team.
In fact, City were the better team for most of the match against Pirates.
At Soccer City, the visitors pressed hard and were disallowed a goal that looked legit.
And while Benni did point out that the referee was at fault, he didn’t hold back on telling his players where the fault was - in their finishing.
When McCarthy was unveiled as boss, he said that he wanted to make his team a ruthless machine.
He wanted his manne to crush their opponents and beat them six or seven-nil.
It sounded far-fetched, but in the last two games his team haven’t even scored one.
That is a problem that Benni will not take lightly and I honestly hope he doesn’t roll out the “we don’t have goalscorers in South Africa” excuse.
Not when you’re Benni McCarthy, Bafana Bafana’s record goalscorer.
DEBUTANT: Victor Obinna of Cape Town City
If there is one guy who should be able to sort out his team’s problems in front of goal, it’s Benni.
And his players need to respond immediately.
Polokwane are always a tough team to play.
They are tricky and play quick passes through the middle of the park.
City will have to be careful at the back.
