We're in the home stretch. One more month left in the PSL season.
But rather than winding down, things are heating up. In fact it’s already boiling at the top and the bottom of the table.
By the time this column went to print, leaders Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs were yet to play their massive game.
The outcome at Cape Town Stadium could have by this morning changed the whole look of the log table as the teams were separated by one point in first and third.
With City, Chiefs, Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns all in the running, the top four is separated by just two points, what we are now seeing is the most exciting title race for years.
Let’s take a look at some of the key clashes to come and see where the league could be decided.
Wits and Sundowns have two games in hand over the other two.
And the Clever Boys have, I think. the most difficult run in of all. Last night they faced SuperSport United.
They play: Highlands Park, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars, Polokwane City and end the season away to Chiefs.
So we may even have a situation where the league is decided on the last day at FNB Stadium.
Can you imagine? That would be so duidelik.
I think with Wits and Sundowns having played two less games, they are favourites.
So that meeting between the two next Monday also has the potential to be a title decider.
Sundowns play Golden Arrows before Wits then Platinum Stars, Orlando Pirates, Baroka, Maritzburg and finally Highlands.
We must not forget that teams like Baroka and Highlands are fighting for their lives and that should a victory secure safety they may well get it.
What a story it would be if Cape Town City won the title in their maiden season. A fairytale actually.
They only play one more contender after Chiefs and that’s SuperSport and then only one relegation candidate in Free State Stars – by far the easiest of the run ins.
And although they don’t have their destiny in their own hands they can win all their games and sit back and watch the chips fall.
Lastly, Amakhosi had been written off by many after their early season form but they’ve crept up that log. And may even be top this morning who knows.
They have two big games in their last five that’s the weekend’s clash with SuperSport and then that final-day showdown with Wits.
The problem for Chiefs and Downs too is that they are the teams everyone wants to beat.
So every game for them is a potential banana skin – that’s also why I say keep an eye on Wits with their two games in hand and current form.
