Cape Town Stadium. Cape Town City the league leaders. Wits the title contenders. PSL supremacy up for grabs.
This is going to be one hell of a game.
Wits come to Cape Town with their sights firmly set on that top spot.
The Clever Boys are in third position, just one point off City.
But they won’t find a tougher fight in the PSL than the one we expect the Citizens to put up tonight.
CTC may be top but their place is not a comfortable one.
They have a one-point lead but they’ve played more games than Wits and Sundowns so they could be caught.
That’s why they have to win this match – to keep Wits at bay.
I say it again; games in hand are not points on the table and a win will help the Citizens’ title bid more than any other.
That’s because I think of all the teams challenging Wits have possibly the best chance.
They certainly are desperate after finishing second last season and Gavin Hunt is doing all he can with squad rotation to keep his players fresh.
The only time they lost in the league in 2017 is to Mamelodi Sundowns and there’s no shame in that.
They play a more direct brand of football and in Thulani Hlatshwayo and Buhle Mkhwanazi they boast, and I’ve said this before, the best centreback pairing in the league.
But the Citizens have made a mockery of defences around the country with their impressive build-up play and love of scoring late goals at times.
They can show they are not just keeping that top spot warm for the eventual winners but that they will be there come May 27.
And it all comes down to tonight.
The last time they met, in December, City won 3-2 with captain fantastic Lebogang Manyama scoring the winner in the 94th minute.
It was a cracker and I’m expecting more of the same.
I can’t wait to see Eric Tinkler's plan, especially to curb Gabadinho Mhango and same for Wits who will have to control the main manne Manyama, Aubrey Ngoma and Bongo Jayiya.
