It’s important for every rugby team to have a culture - something you stand for.
It’s what keeps supporters coming back week after week - even when times are tough.
The culture is what gets people to pull together under one blanket.
And as the season draws to a close, a number of clubs’ culture and indeed character will be tested.
We’ve seen how a revamped bar area and social nights have pulled a club like Brackenfell together.
They definitely punched above their weight this year, comfortably avoiding relegation.
Then there is Parow NNK - who showed great fighting spirit, bouncing back after registering their first win of the campaign against Belhar after the June break.
They are not out of danger yet and you get the feeling that it will be them and Primrose playing in the promotion/relegation clash once the regular season is done this weekend.
Locked on 14 log points each, both sides have tough games this weekend.
NNK will travel to Stellenbosch this weekend where they will face Vics, while Primrose will host Maties at Rosmead Avenue.
It’s tough to see any of the sides winning their encounters, which will leave Primrose in the playoff match as NNK have a superior points difference.
All of this can change, however, if Kuilsrivier finally awake from their slump.
With only one win this season, it’s Kuilsrivier’s culture and character that will be tested.
Last night, they faced Maties in Stellenbosch, before travelling to Durbanville to play Durbell this weekend.
Having swapped coaches during the season, the importance of a club’s culture and the coach and players’ buy-in that is again highlighted in this instance.
Even if they suffered defeat last night, Kuilsrivier still have a chance of survival if they manage to beat Durbell this weekend.
But with player depth being an issue at the club, it’s tough to see them putting out a fresh side for the clash against Durbell.
The current national club champions are in the process of preparing a defence of their title and are also chasing second place on the log.
Tygerberg currently occupy that position, but if Durbell managed to beat Vics last night and then get a bonus point against Kuila on Saturday, second place will be theirs.
The Tiere, who enjoyed a superb season, can still drop down to fifth by the end of the weekend.
Coach Ricky Petersen’s side will be hoping that UCT can spring somewhat of a surprise by beating Hamiltons, while also holding thumbs that Maties and Durbell suffer shock defeats to the relegation candidates.
So while it’s the last weekend of regular season, there is clearly still a lot to play for.
