With the Springboks in town, this weekend’s Super League A club action will take place tomorrow night.
And while there will only be three matches, there will definitely be no shortage of action.
After winning their fifth match of the season against Primrose last weekend, Brackenfell are a shoo-in to make it six when they travel to Parow to face the league’s bottom dwellers NNK.
Another win for Johan Kotze’s impressive side will see them leapfrog defending |champions Maties on the log and take up fifth position after 10 matches – quite an impressive feat for a team that won promotion to the top league at the end of last season.
Their neighbours, Kuils Rivier, will host fellow strugglers Sir Lowrians in a battle that will go a long way in determining the fate of the two teams at the end of the season.
Both sides have only registered one win apiece so far this term and will be |turbo-charged to double up their win column.
But it’s in Durbanville where the big boys will clash when coach Bobby Joubert’s Durbell host the unbeaten Hamiltons in the only other clash on the night.
It will be Hammies who will enter the match as favourites, but they will not underestimate the current national club champs.
In-form Hammies looseforward Patrick O’Brien says: “I’m so excited [ahead of the match], I can’t wait.
“It’s going to be a cracker – very physical up front. I’m just hoping we get a pretty clued up |referee at the breakdown, because they’ve got some good loosies and as a team I think they’ve only lost one game [to SK Walmers].
“So you can never go into a match too confidently.”
While it will be a tough battle up front, Durbell also have to be watchful of Hammies’ backline, where experienced centre Morgan Newman and youngster Harlon Klaasen have struck up a decent midfield partnership.
And while they will be looking to their forwards to give them good go-forward ball, it’s Klaasen who has the ability to spark something out of nothing.
Of the encounter against the club champs, former Boland Kavalier Klaasen, 22, says: “I like to play against big teams, because it is my first year playing in the Western Province league. It’s quite exciting to play against the club champs of last year.”
For the hosts, fullback Angus Cleophas and the creative Jason Kriel will pose a threat to the opposition, while experienced prop Ashton Constant will look to help give his forwards the upper hand in the clash.
