No! I was surprised that so many people took an interest. I know sport is very important to Capetonians, but boxing and Mixed Martial Arts?
In fact, any fighting sport leaves a bit of a distaste in my mouth, because I believe that our society is already violent enough.
It seems we still have a strong sense of aggression and that we live it out through the likes of McGregor and Mayweather.
How is it that we spend so much time and energy on two men trying to beat the living daylights out of each other?
And how is it that so much money is still being spent on watching such barbaric sports?
I understand McGregor and Mayweather split a purse worth more than $100 million (R1.3 billion) for what was essentially 30 minutes worth of meat tenderising.
It’s like living back in the times of the Roman Empire, when the lives of slaves and gladiators were as cheap as the price of a ticket into the Colosseum.
Friends of mine who have never ever before talked about boxing or MMA, were suddenly able to quote me stats and betting odds about the fight.
They were spending time on Youtube watching McGregor and Mayweather knocking out their past opponents.
And based on that, they were picking sides.
It was sort of funny. But I couldn’t help seeing the underbelly of it all.
In a society that is already so violent; where people beat each other into a pulp for something as simple as being cut off at a stop street; where women and children are used as punching bags and where a short fuse ruins lives, why are we still enjoying something like this?
We ban cigarettes and alcohol on TV, but open aggression and violence are apparently OK.
