If the big bosses at Sanzaar can’t see it, it’s clear for us regular folks to see that the Kings and the Sunwolves DON’T belong in Super Rugby.
Yes, the Kings won the match 37-23 but those nearly two hours on Saturday is something I’ll never get back.
Honestly, the lack of quality in the match was shocking.
A local club match would have been more entertaining.
Not only was the match played at a slow tempo, but players lost the ball in contact at will, there were no pillars at ruck time, the defence was poor, there were handling errors galore and the Sunwolves got nervous every time they got a sniff of the tryline.
This is NOT super rugby and Sanzaar will feel it in their pockets if they don’t trim the competitors in this competition to at least 14 teams.
I’m not usually a fan of Aussie derbies, but even Thursday’s match between the Force and the Reds, which the former won 26-19 was eye candy in comparison to this gemors.
Those of you who watched the match between the Highlanders and the Crusaders, for example, would have seen the big difference between the top teams in the competition and the likes of the Kings and the Sunwolves.
I’m all about promoting and expanding rugby, but the Kings aren’t even good enough to compete in the local Currie Cup, so why then are they still involved in Super Rugby?
Apart from their on-field woes, the franchise is also poorly run off the field.
Then there is the Sunwolves.
There are a number of good players currently plying their trade in Japan.
So why don’t they just use a team like Suntory Sungoliath who went through the 2016/17 season unbeaten?
They would have had more time together and would have played better as a unit.
Then you’ve got the Force, who I also believe aren’t really good enough for this competition.
Yes, Dave Wessels and his men got the better of the Reds, but they aren’t exciting enough to pull crowds.
With those three gone, I believe the other team that should be cut from the tournament is the Rebels.
The Cheetahs are the other team that haven’t really been one of the stronger ones historically.
But judging by the way they played against the Bulls this past weekend, I believe they are on the up and as a “feeder” team to the South African “system” it’s important for South Africa to have the Bloemfontein brigade in the Super Rugby competition.
This coming weekend the Stormers travel to the Kings and if they don’t leave the Mandela Bay Stadium with a 50-point winning margin, I’ll be shocked.
Is that the sort of results you want to see in SUPER Rugby?
