I don't understand the South African Rugby Union (Saru).
If they want to get rid of Allister Coetzee, they should have done so straight after the final whistle was blown in the 27-13 defeat to Wales at the end of last year.
For Saru boss Mark Alexander to come out and say they are unsure if Coetzee will still be the man at the top this year, just highlights how deurmekaar rugby is at the top in South Africa.
Don’t they understand that planning and plotting a World Cup win takes time?
Last year it was the same story when Heyneke Meyer stepped down.
Allister was only unveiled as Springbok coach in April last year and exactly two months later he was in charge of the Springboks for the first time.
Yes, Toetie has the knowledge of local players and you could argue that two months is enough time.
So does Saru now want to appoint a new coach and give him as little time to prep for the season, or do they stick with Coetzee and give him proper time to prepare for this year?
Either way, this is unsettling.
With Rassie Erasmus having to deny that he will return to SA to hold talks with Saru, Coetzee will undoubtedly feel undermined by the situation.
And Saru is to blame for it. They were the ones that failed the Bok coach from the very start when they handed him inexperienced assistants.
Nou spring hulle rond and want this guy and that guy to help out.
I agree wholeheartedly that Coetzee has proven nothing to suggest that he should still be the Bok coach in 2017, but to show him the door now is a bit after the fact.
Fans, I believe, have made peace with the fact that Toetie will guide the national team this year.
And should he go at the end of January, who are the likely ones to take over?
New Zealander Dave Rennie was linked with the job not too long ago, but I’m not sure if a foreigner will be able to cope with the sort of issues we are facing in the country right now.
And if they can’t get him, Coetzee should be given Saru's full backing.
Maybe with a little more support from his bosses, Toetie will feel like he finally belongs.
PS: With Adriaan Strauss having retired from international rugby, the Boks are also still without a captain – Handre Pollard is the early favourite, but only once the coach knows whether he is going to stay or go will the leader be appointed.
Can you see how everything is held back because the top guys can’t make up their minds?
