I can’t wait for the All Blacks to come to Newlands later this year.
It will be one of those days when you feel like a kid again, can’t sleep the night before even though you went to bed at 8pm.
While it will be a huge occasion for Cape Town, I am beginning to think that maybe the Springboks can just spring a surprise in that match.
It was in August 2008 when the All Blacks last touched down at the iconic stadium and they ran out 19-0 victors on that day.
Yes, after winning the World Cup twice since then, the Kiwis will enter the match as heavy favourites again. But there are a few things that might work in favour of Allister Coetzee and the Bokke.
After losing to Ireland at the end of last year and failing to beat the British and Irish Lions, I feel Sonny Bill Williams and his manskappe lost that air of invincibility.
And then the Lions go and top the overall Super Rugby log, meaning they were the best team in the round-robin phase according to the log.
Get this: South Africa have no less than three teams in the quarters, with two of those games taking place in Mzansi.
There will be at least one South African team in the semis – with the Lions hosting the Sharks in the quarterfinal this weekend.
And if all goes according to form, it will be the Hurricanes coming to Ellis Park for the semis in two weeks’ time, while the Stormers might go on a trip to New Zealand to face the Crusaders in the last four.
And that means game over for Siya Kolisi and his teammates, I reckon.
But if it is a Lions-Crusaders final, the South African supporters had better get behind the Lions for the win.
Historically, if South African teams win the Super Rugby competition, the Boks are strong.
And like their national team, the Crusaders also lost their invincible touch – losing their first game of the campaign to the Hurricanes on Saturday.
There is, of course, every chance that the Hurricanes might upset the party and beat the Lions at Ellis Park for an all-New Zealand final.
But as a rugby supporter this is not what you want.
Rugby, and yes New Zealand rugby as well, need a strong Springbok team.
They need the rivalry in order to keep improving their game as well.
As for the Stormers, they will also help the confidence in the national team camp if they can get past the Chiefs this weekend.
Having beaten the New Zealanders earlier in the campaign, they will know that they need another good showing like that to reach the semis.
It’s that trip to Canterbury, though, that would have me worried if I was Robbie Fleck.
