The blaze engulfed several Wendy houses and a brick house in Sipres Way, Bridgetown, early on Thursday morning.
The family is kwaad and say a new electricity meter installed by the City overheated, causing a cable to snap.
They believe the burning cable fell onto a Wendy house, igniting it, and the fire quickly spread to another Wendy house and part of the main house.
Ouma Gadija Omar, 73, who lost everything, says she woke up to the screams of her daughter.
UPSET: Granny Gadija Omar, 73, woke up to child’s screams
On Thursday relatives were at the house to help clear away the debris.
“That cable fell on the Wendy and then the fire started. My daughter was screaming and we all ran out. We have lost everything and I don’t know what we are going to do,” the upset granny says.
“It could have been worse and I am happy that everyone is alive but this is very hartseer.
“The council came to fix the cable this morning (Thursday) because the neighbours’ electricity went off,” she says, pointing to the street pole where the meter is mounted.
Her son Abduraghmaan Omar, 46, sustained burns on his back while trying to save his brother-in-law.
“The ambulance put a dressing on and told me to go to the day hospital in a few days,” he says.
The family dog, Spencer, died in the fire along with some pigeons kept in the backyard.
DAMAGED: The burnt box
Fire and Rescue Services spokesman, Theo Layne, says firefighters received the call at 2.15am and extinguished the blaze by 3.23am.
“The cause of the fire has not been determined,” Layne says.
Area Central Mayco member, Siyabulela Mamkeli, confirms that new meters were installed as the old meters were “at the end of their useful life”.
He could not confirm whether the new meter started the fire.
“However, it is highly unlikely the meter caused this fire as the meter is situated outside the property in a pole-box. Only the customer interface unit is situated in the main house. The cable to the house is protected by a circuit breaker and any fault on the line or house will result in the circuit breaker disconnecting the supply to the property.”
