Since I first wrote about the scary similarities between presidents Jacob Zuma and Donald Trump, there have been many articles by other writers unpacking the same thing.
Not only are their authoritarian politics identical, but it appears they play similar games of subversion. This is really the only possible conceivable reason how they are able to keep the authorities on both sides of the Atlantic so impotent against them.
In both cases, ordinary people are asking: “How much more do you need to find out, before the police takes action?”
To most reasonable people, the #GuptaLeaks emails were surely the end of the line for some.
Personally, I was expecting police raids on prominent office blocks, followed by handcuffs and very juicy court cases ahead of the 2019 elections.
None of this has happened and it doesn’t look likely that it ever will.
The National Prosecuting Authority appears as disinterested in acting against Zuma, as the FBI is against Trump.
There were widespread and reasonable expectations that some action would be taken with the latest bombshell that Donald Trump Jr. met a Russian lawyer in a hotel room during America’s election campaign.
He admitted to the meeting, saying the dirt he was promised on his father’s opponent Hillary Clinton, never materialised in the end.
So at best, it was attempted treason, but considering that America considers Russia a hostile power, it may even be worse.
Historically, America doesn’t take this sort of thing lightly and many convicted spies have found themselves on the wrong side of federal prison bars.
But, of course, nothing has happened! And that may be in part as Trump fired the FBI director who was so determined to investigate his possible collusion with Russia during America’s 2016 elections.
Not only does it all smell very fishy indeed, but it also all sounds all too familiar.
Our own prosecuting authorities and intelligence agency have been drawn into allegations around Jacob Zuma’s election.
Remember the “spy tapes” saga that’s due before the courts again in September?
The matters are so similar, America might just as well be a third-world country at the moment.
Then there’s the stench of moral decay that encircles these two men. Both of them have murky pasts when it comes to women.
While Zuma’s rape trial still leaves a bitter taste, Trump continues to shrug off allegations of rape, including from a woman who was 13 years old at the time and from one of his ex-wives, Ivana (who since retracted the allegation).
And of course he denies it, but even his latest behaviour with women is an example of the things he denies; slimy for any modern man, never mind a US president.
Last week, he commented on the physical appearance of the French first lady. To her face!
And then again to her husband! While his wife was standing nearby! And while they are official guests of the French.
There’s a lot to be said for when the French of all people find a man’s behaviour reprehensible.
He might as well have pinched her bum, while winking at her husband.
Basically these two cavemen are walking disasters; brothers from different mothers; bumbling social misfits who somehow stumbled their way into power.
They are Dr Strangelove, Mr Bean and Inspector Clouseau all wrapped up into one dangerously powerful person.
But like a blogger pointed out recently, the body needs to get sick every now and again, to remember what it’s like to be healthy.
And then do everything in our power to never get sick again.
So hopefully this is just the world’s political body dealing with a necessary case of the flu.
And maybe this will teach us to look after our political health next time. Our next flu shot is in 2019.
