GLORY: Mamelodi Sundowns crowned Caf champions in Egypt

‘Downs can make Club Cup final’

Pitso Mosimane insists South Africans shouldn’t be surprised if they make the Club World Cup final.

Mamelodi Sundowns arrived back in the country yesterday after being crowned kings of Africa in the Caf Champions Final in Egypt on Sunday.

And that gives them the right to play in the intercontinental club tournament from December 8-18, where they will rub shoulders with the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Nacional.

And coach Pitso says: “Someone said earlier that don’t be
surprised to see them in the final of the Club World Cup. I believe we will be there.”

Pitso and his champs were welcomed by their fans at OR Tambo Airport and rewarded with R700 000 from the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Accompanied by Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba, Pitso says his players are all available for the national team ahead of today’s World Cup qualifier squad announcement.

The two tacticians haven’t been on the best of terms in the last while, with Pitso trying to protect his players in their run to the African final.

Mosimane wanted Tebogo Langerman, Hlompho Kekana and Keagan Dolly left out of Bafana’s dead-rubber 2017 Afcon qualifier against Mauritania last month.

But Shakes dragged them to Nelspruit and then back again to Joburg for a friendly against Egypt in the Nelson Mandela Challenge a couple of days later.

Pitso, however, say he has no beef with Shakes.

He says: “Bra Shakes has been with us all the way. Don’t believe what you read in the papers. This is genuine, we are together.”

Pitso also got a boost from the PSL, as chief Irvin Khoza said that they would extend the league to help Downs compete better in the Club World Cup.

Khoza adds: “With the league last week we took a strategic decision that we are gonna extend the league by three weeks.

“It’s not going to be easy but we have done our best to find the best way of making sure they get support and a chance to be in the final, and win in Japan.”

Downs host Polokwane for a place in the  TKO quarterfinals tonight (6pm).
