Protesting Witwatersrand University students went topless yesterday as protests for free higher education continued.
Chaos erupted at the institution when students clashed with police following disruptions to classes.
Lectures were meant to resume yesterday after a two-week suspension due to violent protests by the #FeesMustFall movement.
Police fired stun grenades and tear gas to disperse students who attempted to disrupt classes.
A number of police officers, students and at least one lecturer were reportedly injured during the chaos. At least two students were arrested.
Police accused students of violating a court order that prohibited them from gathering in groups of more than 15.
One of the arrested was Busisiwe Seabe, a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC), and one of the #FeesMustFall leaders at Wits.
During the mayhem some female students took off their tops to force police to stop firing rubber bullets into crowds.
In a video posted on social media, a topless girl can be seen with her hands in the air screaming at police to stop shooting.
“We are vulnerable, I got beat up this morning for not doing
anything, please stop shooting us,” she shouted.
The university management warned that if classes could not resume this week, the institution might have to remain closed indefinitely.
