Noah to host MTV Africa awards

HOSTING AWARDS: Funnyman Trevor Noah

The US-based local comedian will be in town next month to host the MAMAs.

Local Trevor Noah fans will finally be able to see the comedian on stage in South Africa.

The funny man, who has made a home in New York with the US talk show, The Daily Show, has been selected to host the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) next month.

Trevor took to his Twitter account to announce: “Guess who’s hosting the @MTVbaseAfrica #MTVMAMA2016 See you 22 October in my hometown Johannesburg!”

The post was accompanied by a caption of the MAMA poster which displays a silhouette of Noah against the backdrop of the Joburg CBD with the words: “Can you guess the host?”

The MAMAs responded to the tweet, posting: “ ?@Trevornoah its gonna be so lit! Thank you Trevor! #MTVMAMAHost.”

The awards, an annual celebration of African and international talent and achievement, will be held in Joburg this year after it took place in Durban for the past two years.

This year’s ceremony will be headlined by Babes Wodumo alongside rapper Nasty C and Nigerian afropop singer Yemi Alade.

Fans have flocked to social media to express their excitement at the event as well as the announcement that Trevor will be the host.

@freckled_gadiie 2h2 tweeted: @Trevornoah @MTVbaseAfrica mina I’ve been saying. Thank you Mtv for this wise decision.

And @Moses_Nku wrote: @Trevornoah @MTVbaseAfrica congratulations Trev! I’m so proud of you. Looking forward to the award show.”

Nominations for the MAMAs are expected to be announced today.

The show will be broadcast live on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) and MTV (DStv channel 130) on October 22 at 9pm.
