‘No need for fee protest’

Students protesting at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

DHET says students are fighting a decision that hasn't been made yet.

The Department of Higher Education and Training yesterday said claims of imminent fees hikes that led to violent protests at three of the five campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal were unfounded as no decision on the matter has been made.

Student protests over expected fees hikes, poor accommodation and inadequate security have resulted in police arresting scores in the past three weeks.

DHET Director-General, Gwebinkundla Qonde said consultations were ongoing but the department hopes to make an announcement later this month.
