No Bok spice in Currie

IN JAPAN: Lions ace Elton Jantjies

Player commitments leave bland WP squad in its wake.

There won’t be much added spice in the Currie Cup semifinals this weekend when the Free State Cheetahs host the Golden Lions and Western Province travel to Loftus to face the Blue Bulls.

With the contracted Springboks not available, some of those released are either not available because of commitments elsewhere or not sure of a place in their domestic team.

WP welcome back Bongi Mbonambi and Juan de Jongh, while at the other end of the pitch, Rudy Paige will in all likelihood play off the bench for Piet van Zyl.

Bulls coach Nollis Marais explains to Superrugby: “I believe both of them will be fit for the game. It’s important to note that when Paige came off the bench against Boland he did well and the combination is very good.

In the Lions camp, Johan Ackermann can call on Malcolm Marx, Faf de Klerk and Julian Redelinghuys, while Lionel Mapoe, Elton Jantjies, Warren Whiteley, Jaco Kriel and Franco Mostert all left to play club rugby in Japan.

The Cheetahs, meanwhile, have Oupa Mohoje available.
