A young father was gunned down when he went to the shop.
Cafda residents in Retreat were shocked to find the lifeless body of 24-year-old Jarrett “Dinky” Collins in Peter Charles Street around 6am yesterday morning.
He was shot nine times in the back and head, and police believe it may be gang-related.
Resident Ethel Adams says: “When I went to buy electricity this morning, I saw him lying there in the street bleeding.”
Jarrett’s cousin, who asked not to be named, says he was not a gangster. He was nicknamed Dinky due to his short stature.
“He was a good guy. You could ask him anything and he would do it without back-chatting,” says the woman.
Neighbours say Jarrett was always driving or fixing his motorbike, or in the house with his two-year-old daughter, Haylee, and his girlfriend Tammy.
The handyman installed laminated flooring for a living and stayed with his parents in Cafda.
Dad John Klink says he still woke Jarrett up because he had to be at work early. “I woke him up, he went to the shop, and he never came back,” John says.
A witness says Jarrett was walking with someone. The second person is believed to be the intended target but he was unharmed.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a case of murder is under investigation. No arrests made yet.
