Members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Organised Crime detectives swooped on several addresses in the area on Thursday and nabbed two suspects for the murder of Octavia Johannessen.
Three other suspects were also taken in for questioning. The arrested suspects, aged 20, will appear in court soon.
Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut explains: “In our quest to bring perpetrators of serious violent crimes to book, organised crime detectives accompanied by NIU members descended on several addresses in Hanover Park in the early hours of [Thursday] morning.
“They arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of a 16-year-old teenager who was shot and killed near a tuck shop in August 2017. Three other suspects were taken in for questioning.
“Police will continue with endeavours to make the communities of the Western Cape safer.”
On 14 August, Octavia, who was a pupil at Crystal High School, had just left a tuck shop and was walking to her aunt’s home in Howick Court when gunmen opened fire. The meisie was shot three times and died at the scene.
Two weeks ago, Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi held a crime imbizo in the area and vowed to “squeeze” criminals.
He promised to make several arrests during their time there.
