Two men who were transporting 3 337 units of abalone worth half a million rand have been busted by cops.
The suspects were caught yesterday along the N2, Lwandle, with abalone in their possession while travelling in a silver Mitsubishi Colt bakkie.
Police were responding to a tip-off from the public that the men were being escorted by two other vehicles, a Toyota and a BMW, heading for Hermanus.
The police with the Cape Town dog unit gave chase while the two vehicles attempted to force cops off the road.
Police brought the bakkie to a stop as the one suspect attempted to flee.
Officers found bags of abalone on the back seat.
They also recovered an unlicensed .38 special revolver with five rounds of ammunition.
Police spokesman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says the suspects will be appearing in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday and will be facing charges of illegal possession and transportation of abalone and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
