Train hero Darryn August is working hard and remains hopeful to one day walk and run again.
The 27-year-old has progressed from lying flat on his back to sitting in a wheelchair.
The Athlone youth counsellor has been discharged from Tygerberg Hospital and is receiving physiotherapy at the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre in Mitchells Plain, and is hoping for a full recovery.
Darryn was left paralysed after he was stabbed on a Metrorail train while trying to protect female passengers from being robbed.
He fractured his spine when he was flung from the train and hit a tree.
The Cape Argus reports that Darryn is hopeful of being back on his feet soon.
Darryn says: “This for me is a massive challenge… It doesn’t matter what the doctors tell me, life goes on. I don’t care if they say I’m not going to walk (again), time will tell and I’ll keep on persevering.”
Yesterday he posted on Facebook: “Day #12… and I’m feeling way stronger than before… I’m able to do so many things. Today I have a full roster and tons of things to do so I’m super excited to being able to start cooking… and re-learning so many things…”
Darryn receives daily motivational messages on Facebook from friends and even strangers who have come out and supported him.
