Tot dies in sleep at crèche

GONE: Thaylin Lewis was found dead at educare

The one-year-old told his mother "he is going to Jesus".

Police are investigating an inquest following the death of a one-year-old child at a crèche.

And in a chilling twist, hours before his mysterious death, Thaylon Lewis told his mother Lee-Anne Lewis, 29, he is “going to Jesus”.

Little did the grieving mother of two know that would be the last time she would see her youngest son alive.

Last Tuesday, the Kleinvlei toddler tragically died at Bravewave Educare in Eerste River, the creche he was attending.

According to his parents, teachers at the crèche could not wake him up after his morning sleep.

“They took him to the doctor and there he was declared dead,” Lee-Anne says.

“The doctor couldn’t tell us the cause of death.

“When I picked him up I felt a bump on the back of his head but I still can’t say if that was the reason,” she says.

Lee-Anne says they will have to wait up to 10 weeks for the autopsy results.

“Right now we have more questions than answers,” she says.

“But he was a healthy boy, very playful even the morning he left.

“He initially didn’t want to go to crèche but he went.

“When he woke up early the morning, he told me he is going to Jesus.

“I thought nothing of it because he was always talking about Jesus and the stuff he learns at crèche.”

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says the matter is still under investigation.

“No one has been arrested as yet,” she says.

The creche owner, only known as Sophie, did not want to speak to the Daily Voice yesterday.

It’s not clear if the facility is registered with the Department of Social Development, who did not return queries for comment by last night.
