The manager of a cellphone store was shot and killed behind the counter in full view of shocked customers.
Pakistani Aqib Khan, 27, was helping a customer when three men entered the shop on Tuesday afternoon at 3.15pm, and opened fire.
His family is baffled by the murder at the Gatesville, Athlone, shop.
Aqib’s cousin, Rashad Iqbal, 43, says the killers walked into the shop and fired directly at him.
Aqib was injured and rushed to hospital where he later died.
Rashad says: “They just walked in and shot at him, then they ran out again. He was still helping a customer.
“Three shots were fired, he was hit twice.”
Another cousin Aman Khan says there were several customers inside the shop with Aqib.
“We don’t know why he was targeted,” he says.
“Nothing was taken out of the shop. It’s a new shop, it only opened three months ago.
“Since then there hasn’t been a robbery or an attempt on his life.
“There were customers and two employees still inside.
CCTV footage show at least three other people in the shop before the suspects walk in.
Aqib is helping a female customer and looks in the suspects’ direction.
Shots are fired and the suspects run off.
After taking a hit to the side of his body, Aqib falls to the ground where he remains motionless.
Customers scatter as they run for cover before the other employees run to Aqib’s aid.
Police spokesperson, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says the suspects are still at large.
“No one has been arrested at this stage. The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated,” she says.
