The month of Ramadaan began on a sad note for the family of a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed while walking to school.
Rafheeq Kalam was walking down Lepelhout Street, Bonteheuwel, when he was approached by gunmen in a white Toyota Run X just after 7.45am on Friday.
Police found 13 cartridges near Rafheeq’s body, which was riddled with bullet holes.
The teen attended Modderdam High School where he was in Grade 8.
Witnesses say the gunman stood over Rafheeq’s body “to finish him off”.
The boy’s father, Gabebodien Kalam, 42, who rushed to the scene, says he has no idea why his son was murdered.
Police confirmed they are investigating possible gang links.
The teenager had been a promising soccer player and was a striker for Bluegum Rangers.
Gabebodien says he was at home with backache, and a friend came to tell him his son is dead.
He says: “I am not with my son 24/7 and I don’t know what he does on the outside. I don’t know why someone would do this to my son.”
Rafheeq’s mother Nazley was inconsolable and collapsed at the scene as his school friends and family tried to console her.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says cops have made no arrests yet.
The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds to the body. The possibility that this can be gang-related will be investigated.”
