A bloody turf war between two rival gangs in Delft which appears to have spilled over to neighbouring areas is being blamed for the murder of a taxi driver in Elsies River.
It’s believed Alfonso Witbooi, 28, was killed by members of the Terrible Josters gang.
He was shot in the head while driving his taxi down Owen Road in Clarke Estate on Wednesday at about 6pm.
It’s believed he was an alleged member of the G-Unit gang.
This week the streets of Delft were running red with blood after 10 people were killed in just six days.
Community Safety MEC Dan Plato blamed the violence and bloodshed in Delft on a drug turf war between the 28s and the Terrible Josters gangs.
The youngest victim in Delft was four-year-old Macheano Geswindt, who was shot while playing in his yard when gunmen opened fire on a group of men sitting around a bonfire.
Police said the house was a suspected drug den.
The Daily Voice attempted to speak to Alfonso’s family in Ruyterwacht yesterday but were told by men working in the yard that no one was home.
It is not clear if Alfonso had any passengers in his van when he was killed.
Police spokesperson, Constable Noloyiso Rwexana, says a case of murder was opened and the circumstances around the incident were being investigated.
“Police attended to a shooting complaint and found a 28-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his forehead. No one has been arrested.”
A police source says it appears the Terribles are looking to “expand their territory and are now taking on other gangs”.
“The gang situation is a problem because it is about power and control.”
Elsies River community activist, Imraahm Mukaddam, who is also a member of the community policing forum, believes gangsters’ fight for territory is getting out of control.
“The gangs are operating like the military, they have generals and even medals and titles,” he says.
“A crime against humanity is being committed when children are being used as soldiers.”
