The site, situated at the new Philippi Village, will see poles with the names of past residents who have made a change in their community being installed.
This event on Monday coincides with the Heritage Day Market Day hosted in collaboration with the (PEDI) Philippi Economic Development Initiative and the City.
The purpose of this event is to stimulate placemaking, promote Philippi Village and to pilot an informal traders market day.
Philippi Village CEO, Dr Amor Strauss, says when they began the development several years ago, residents already made a plea for the memorial.
The initial proposal called for memorial walls, but Strauss say the team felt that was too static and so work began on creating an interactive memorial.
“The community made nominations for the people they believe should be honoured and the monument allows for more names to be added later.”
Among some of the first to be honoured is Mlahleni Arosi who was the publisher of the Nyanga News from 1968 to 1973, Swartbooi Kwinana who started the Nyanga Soccer Association in 1965 and Susan Conjwa an activist and community worker.
