This pastor’s son is hoping to go from the pulpit to the theatre stage preaching the same message.
Dillon Serelina, 22, from Strandfontein, has written a musical called Generational Carnage, about youngsters and their daddy issues.
A girl who grows up without a father, and a boy whose dad is a terrible role model, fall in love and realise they have serious issues.
Dillon laughs when asked if this is a true life story.
“My dad is a school teacher and pastor and a very good influence on my life,” he says.
“I’ve just spoken to people and the message that came through was that: ‘You are not the product of your parents’ past or sins.’
His favourite musicals are Annie and Dreamgirls and this is what inspired his own musical.
“In the play there’s music from The Beatles, Beyoncé and Whitney Houston,” says Dillon.
Guest performers from Tafelsig, Bonteheuwel and Lotus River also have singing parts, performed with a live band.
It took Dillon two years to write the two-hour long musical.
In the meantime, the young man is hard at work studying towards his Bachelors Degree in Theology.
“I love the arts, but I also answered my calling and am studying part time at the International College of Bible and Missions.
“But I also did a course at the A.C.T Institute where I worked under Denise Newman,” he adds.
This dual experience is what he hopes will help change his community and families for the better.
Generational Carnage is on at De Duine Primary School hall in Lotus River on Friday, 30 September, at 6.30pm.
